Glossary
Air Dried Lumber that has been dried naturally, by the elements, as opposed to being dried in a kiln.
Anti-stain Treatment Lumber that has been dipped in or sprayed with a chemical treatment to prevent discoloration and the growth of fungus and mildew during shipment and storage.
Boards Generally refers to lumber of 1" thickness.
Board Foot A unit of measure for lumber, equal to a piece of wood 1" thick, 12" wide, and 1' long. At the mill, lumber is usually sold at a specified amount of money per 1,000 board feet. Calculate board feet using the formula below:
thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet
12
Bow Deviation from a straight line drawn end to end along the wide face of a piece of lumber.
Buck To rough cut, for length, a log or long timber.
Boxed Heart A timber cut designation where the piece has been cut to capture, or "box in" the pith or center of the tree when viewed from the end.
Cant A large flat-sided timber to be remanufactured to smaller ones.
Check / Checking Separation of wood wood fiber across the annual growth rings. (in green lumber, this occurs most noticeably in pieces containing "heart", and is to be expected as the lumber dries and loses moisture).
Corbel A decorative piece, typically wood or stone, applied to the underside of the eaves of a house.
Crook Deviation from a straight line drawn end to end along the narrow face (side) of a piece of lumber.
Cross Cut To cut a piece of lumber perpendicular to its length.
Cup Deviation form a straight line drawn edge to edge across the wide face of a piece of lumber.
Design Values Strength factors of lumber based upon six different properties or methods of assessment. Included in these are: Stress in Bending (Fb), Tension parallel to grain (Ft), Horizontal Shear (Fv), Compression Parallel to Grain (Fc), Compression Perpendicular to Grain (Fc), Modulus of Elasticity (MOE).
Dimension Lumber Generally refers to lumber 2" in thickness.
Dressed Clean surfaced (see surfaced)
Dry Lumber with a moisture content of less than 19% (less than 15% for Selects and factory lumber).
Dry Kiln A special room or building in which lumber is dried by controlling the moisture and temperature.
Eased Edge A slight rounding of the edges of lumber, applied as it passes through the planer.
End Matched A pattern (usually Tongue & Groove), run on both ends of a piece of lumber (usually flooring), that when butted to another piece, form a tight and stable joint.
Factory Lumber Lumber intended for remanufacture after it leaves the sawmill (examples: cabinetry, moldings, furniture, laminated beams)
Flat Grain Lumber sawn so that the wide face of the piece is approximately parallel (less than 45 degrees) to the annual growth rings seen on the end of the piece.
FOHC Free of heart centers (see Boxed Heart).
Full Sawn Lumber or timber that is cut, in the rough, to it's full nominal dimension.
Grade Mark The crayon mark made on a piece of lumber, by the grader at the sawmill, to designate grade.
Grade Stamp An inked stamp put on lumber to designate grade and other characteristics of the piece; usually the stamp is endorsed by an independent objective third party to ensure consistancy between manufacturers.
Green Lumber with a moisture content in excess of 19%.
Hardwood Lumber from deciduous trees - trees that lose their leaves in Fall (many are nut & fruit bearers).
Heat Treated Lumber placed in a kiln and held at a specific temperature for a specific period of time, to kill any wood boring pests or larvae, prior to export.
Joist A structural framing member used horizontally to support a floor or ceiling.
Kerf Describes the space made, or the amount of wood taken out, as a saw blade travels through a piece of wood.
Kiln (see Dry Kiln)
Kiln Dried Lumber that has been dried in a kiln.
Kiln Wet Lumber that has been through the kiln, but still contains more moisture than is allowable for lumber designated as dry.
Log Deck A holding yard for logs before they go into the sawmill for manufacture.
Machine Stress Rated (MSR) Lumber grading for strength that involves non-destructive mechanical stess testing and marking of the modulud of elasticity (MOE).
MBF Thousand board feet.
MC 15 Lumber with a moisture content of 15% or less.
MG Mixed grain.
Mill Run The general grade description for a mill's entire grade tally on a "run" or manufacture of a particular product, with no products selected out for grade.
Mixed Grain A given quantity of lumber that will contain pieces of both flat and vertical grain.
Moisture Content The weight of water in wood, expressed as a percentage of the weight of an oven dry (no moisture) sample of the wood.
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) A ratio describing the amount that a given material will deflect in proportion to an applied load.
MSR Machine stress rated.
NLGA National Lumber Grades Authority.
Nominal Designated name for a size of a piece of lumber - not the actual finished size. ( 2x4 measures 1.5"x3.5")
Pattern A series of grooves, channels, and / or ridges applied to the face of a piece of lumber as it passes through a planer or moulder. (sidings, ceilings)
Pitch Pocket (defect) A separation between the annual growth rings that contains or once contained a sap deposit.
Pith The center or "bulls eye" of the heart of the tree seen in cross section. The center of the annual growth rings.
PLIB Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau.
Random Length A lumber loading containing most or all lengths produced for that product by a manufacturer.
Re-man The process of remanufacturing lumber; or a remanufacturing facility.
Resaw A type of saw used for, or the process of, remanufacturing lumber or timbers into other lumber by cutting parallel to the wide face.
Rip Remanufacturing lumber by making cuts perpendicular to the wide face.
S1S2E Surfaced one side, two edges.
S2S Surfaced two sides.
S4S Surfaced four sides.
Sapwood The part of the log between the heartwood and the bark.
Scant Lumber or timbers manufactured smaller than standard size.
Select A high grade that allows few knots or defects.
Shake 1) A defect, specifically a separation of wood fiber through the annual growth rings. 2) A type of wood shingle used for roofing or siding, typically Cedar.
Slope of Grain The angle formed by the intersection of the wood fibers with the side of a piece of wood.
Softwood The wood from trees commonly referred to as conifers or evergreens.
Species Grouping Different species of wood that are marketed together because they are harvested together and have similar characteristics that make them interchangeable in use. Examples: SPF, ESLP, Hem-Fir
SPF A Canadian species grouping containing several varieties of spruce, pine and fir.
SPIB Southern Pine Inspection Bureau
Stumpage Timber not yet harvested.
Surfaced Lumber that has gone through a planer so that its sides are smooth and uniform in size.
Tally The thickness, width, and length piece count of lumber shipping on a particular order.
TPI Timber Products Inspection.
VG (See Vertical Grain)
Vertical Grain Lumber sawn so that the wide face of the finished piece is approximately perpendicular (greater than 45 degrees) to the annual growth rings of the log.
Wane (defect) The absence of wood along an edge or corner, caused by the piece being cut from wood adjacent to the bark of the log.
Warp (defect) Any combination of bow, crook, cup, or twist.
